DALER - The Drone Walks Using Its Wings!

DALER aka Deployable air Land Exploration Robot is a creation of Ludovic Daler of EPFL's (Swiss Federal Institute Of Technology, Lausanne) Laboratory Of Intelligent Systems. DALER is special - because it can 'walk' on the land using its wings. We haven't seen such a drone before and it does some crazy engineering for sure. When walking it looks like a sea-turtle on the beach - and can have different walking styles depending upon the orientation of the wings. Check out the video below to see the drone in action.

The max speed this drone can walk on the land is 0.2 m/s and can turn at the rate of about 25 degrees per second by rotating wings in opposite directions. The biggest advantage this type of design has is that it eliminates the need of extra pods for crawling or walking.

The robot is deployed in the air in a frisbee-style throw. Once in the air, the wings lock up in their desired position. A single propeller provides enough airflow to keep the drone floating in the air.
