Bullet Train To Run In India On Mumbai-Ahmedabad Route Using Japanese Technology

India seems to be keen on setting up a high-speed bullet train route between Mumbai & Ahmedabad. The technology to setup bullet train will be provided by Japan. The project is expected to cost about $1billion in Yen-based loans to India. France too is interested in setting up their TGV high-speed railway network in India; but the Japanese seem to have won Indian Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh's heart. The overall length of the route is expected to be about 500 kilometers. The technical reviews of the route are expected to be complete by 2014.

Japan Railways Group operates the 'Shinkansen' which is a network of high-speed railway lines in Japan. The maximum operating speed of the train is about 320 kmph and test runs have already cracked the 440 kmph barrier. The maglev trains are way faster than the bullet trains with a record speed of 581 kmph.

We wonder why Indian government has not opted to trust Indian engineer to design and develop high-speed trains in India than taking up loans from Japan to acquire decades old technology. It'd be an interesting mega-engineering project for Indian engineers. What do CEans say?

Probably success of Delhi Metro, has influenced them think that Japanese can manage (trains) better than Indian??

I'd rather trust a proven foreign technology than put several lives in jeopardy for sake of nationalism.

Did Japan jeopardise Japanese when they created bullet train?

Japan was the first country to have bullet train in their tech kitty. Didn't have much of the options.

Please do not take it otherwise, on Top of that they do not have height of corruptions as unfortunately we have in India. There would be "SO" many lives that may travel in those bullet trains.

NOTE: Though no connection with bullet train, but Recently this happened in India.. (2013 Thane Building Collapse). I read the specifications, and I can't tell you what they had used.. 😔

Indian private sector makes more profit than public sector yet Prestige builders (in the above article) were building a sub-standard building. You can only hear frustration whenever IRCTC is brought into conversation - and we are considered to be a dominant player in IT industry. Sorry, if this is Indian engineering, I pick Japanese any day!!

#-Link-Snipped-# : I know the point you are making. Administration & engineering are two different terms. Looks at the roads IRB has been building in Maharashtra and Gujarat. They're top-notch.

Engineering mistakes are different and so are the mishaps happening because of bad administration. Ultimately, it'll be the Indian officials and workers who'll be setting up the infrastructure under Japanese guidance. So if we only want Japanese Guidance, why not engineer the stuff in India itself? If that doesn't happen, India will NEVER have the confidence to be an engineering hub.

If you will talk about the administration, than it is a huge thing and not solvable, can see the example of CWG 2010 bridge, which was made by ARMY in the end, So private sector is good as #-Link-Snipped-# said.

Engineers design and workers build. So if it's Japanese Guidance, it's Japanese engineering only.

I beg to differ. Staying in ahmedabad since past 21 years, and i have hardly come across a couple or few 'TOP-NOTCH' roads !!

Speaking of Administration?? They RE-surface a road, only to be dug up again in just next few weeks. It will then be not touched till the monsoon. And if they do, they would make sure that it won't last till the monsoon ends !! That speaks of the Engineering !!

Lets talk about the Metro itself !!
3 years since the MEGA (Metro- Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad) project has been launched, and the only thing they have done on-site is: big hoardings indicating that Metro would be going through here !!

Well, i agree, it takes time !!
But how about this?? The Metro's route and the BRTS's route are parallel on major stretches !! Well, if it was Metro, then why BRTS?? If it was for BRTS, then why Metro???

I guess, that would clear everyone's stand about the administration here !!
