How to make a smart dustbin using Arduino Uno ?

Smart dustbin is one of the most easiest project one can make with an Arduino Uno. The objective is to setup a device which can sense whenever a person wants to throw something in the dustbin and according to that it can open and close automatically. If you want to create something like this at home then all you need is a dustbin with an open top, an Arduino Uno board, an Ultrasonic sensor, a 9g Servo, a 9v battery, a cardboard and finally some wires.

  1. The first step is to cut the cardboard according to the open top part of the dustbin. Next we can cut it into two equal halves and combine it with the help of a tape so both of them can move freely.
  2. The second step is to insert the Arduino board inside/outside however we like ( its better to insert it inside and then cover it ) and the ultrasonic sensor can be inserted into two identical holes at the front so the wires can be easily connected to the Arduino and it'll be facing the front side.
  3. Then we can attach the servo to one side of the top halves of the dustbin and insert a support ( like a thread ) with the help of which whenever the arm of servo is in motion, the other half would move upwards.
  4. Finally we have to write the program in Arduino IDE for the working of the Ultrasonic sensor and the Servo and upload it in the board.

And now its complete. So whenever we want to throw something in the dustbin, all we have to do is stand in the range of the ultrasonic sensor which'll automatically open the top part and close when we are done.
