Flexible Displays From Samsung Too - Tough Competition For Nokia?

Shortly after Nokia revealed its #-Link-Snipped-# at Nokia World technology show, Samsung also announced that they will have their flexible display phones from next year too. Samsung spokesman Robert Yi said that they would be introducing the flexible displays in the earlier part of 2012 and start off first with handsets and then move on to other mobile devices and tablets.

The flexible displays from Samsung are OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays packed in a rigid case to keep the screen curved. Unlike in LCD, which requires a backlit flexible screen, the OLED has diodes in which every pixel generates light and makes it the perfect material for making flexible screens. This technology was showcased by Samsung at this year's CES.

Samsung has been overwhelmed with their recent success of Galaxy S II, which has already sold 10 million units in mere five months and they are aiming to follow up to its success with the flexible displays. The Samsung Galaxy S II has taken the benefit of the launch of iPhone 4S where its predecessor was launched merely months ago.

Market research firm Strategy Analytics has reported 17.1 million smartphones shipped by Apple compared to 27.8 million by Samsung in the third quarter of the year, while the iPhone 4S ranks highest in sales with 4 million units sold within the first three days of its launch. It would now be interesting to see what Nokia & Samsung has to offer in this segment next year and maybe we will see Apple into the race sooner or later.
