Toshiba ZL2 55-inch Glasses Free 3D TV
3D technology offers the best there is in terms of vision. However what is most irritating about 3D is the fact that you need to wear those 3D glasses the whole time. However, the folks at Toshiba have a solution.
Toshiba has displayed a new glasses free 55 inch 3D HTDV at this years IFA in Berlin. The Toshiba ZL2 is the world’s first large screen glasses free 3D TV. It has a Quad Full HD display resolution of 3840 x 216.
Additional features include decent 2D and 3D viewing experience, including face tracking, Resolution+, Auto Calibration, 2D to 3D conversion, and Smart TV features including Toshiba Places.

Quite unexpected for a TV, it uses face tracking technology to detect the viewers position. The ZL2 is able to provide 3D images for up to nine different viewing positions, enabling multiple people to enjoy simultaneous 3D viewing, with no glasses required. At the touch of a button, it is able to detect the viewers’ position and to adjust the viewing zones accordingly. This is where the challenge lies for the TV, since a slight change in position can cause double images. You will probably require to recalibrate the TV using face-tracking. Interesting move by Toshiba, but we can only wait and watch to know how it works out for them.
Incase you are curious about how this technology works; it uses the stereoscopic principle of displaying a picture to the right eye and at the same time displaying another with a small offset to the other. This lets it achieve the 3D effect.
It will have WiFi support, Toshiba’s Cevo engine, built-in Freeview HD, and support for USB hard drive video recording. A remote control app for iPhone users will also be released.
The ZL2 will be available in Q4 2011 and is expected to go on sale in Germany in December for around 8000 Euros.
