YotaPhone Released In Russia, Features Dual-Screen With LCD & E-Ink Display

The Dual-Screen Android smartphone called the YotaPhone is finally here. We first saw its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show 2013 and now it is all set to launch in Russia, Austria, France, Spain and Germany before Christmas and in 15 other countries including the UK by the end of first quarter 2014. What is amazing about the YotaPhone is that it features two screens - a 4.3-inch 720 x 1280 HD LCD display on the front and a 360 x 640 e-ink display on the back. While the front screen can be used like a normal color display available on all Android smartphones, the e-ink display on the back will be able to receive notifications and display news or maps. The use of rear display will basically conserve the YotaPhone's battery life. YotaPhone brings the power of Android smartphone and an e-reader into a single device.

Yota, the Russian smartphone manufacturer, who has been providing 4G mobile broadband services in the country, launched the YotaPhone in an event in Moscow. Speaking at the event, Yota Devices CEO Vlad Martynov said that Yotaphone helps to solve the problem of the ‘always dark’ screen that current smartphones suffer from when in sleep mode. Powered by a Dual Core 1.7 GHz Krait processor, the YotaPhone runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 OS and comes in two colors - black and white. On the camera front, the YotaPhone brings a 13 megapixel one with LED Flash on the rear and a 1 megapixel one on the front. The electronic paper screen on the back end can stream social media, text messages, maps, weather and breaking news. It also works as an e-book.

User's storage needs are catered to by 2GB RAM and 32GB eMMC. On the tech specs list, YotaPhone talks of a 1800 mAh battery that it claims has 7-10 times the battery life of other smartphones while in ‘reading mode’. The connectivity options include WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0 and GPS. The phone supports FM radio, micro-SIM, special YotaPhone gestures and Put2Back applications for the back screen.

Coming to the pricing details. The YotaPhone will be available for 19,990 roubles ($600) in Russian stores. In Europe and the United Arab Emirates the YotaPhone will be available for 499 euros ($680) and $600, respectively. Yota has already received about 10,000 pre-orders, mostly from Russia. We are a start-up company that had a big idea and we’ve executed on that idea,” said Martynov. “This is YotaPhone 1.0. Expect other big and new things to follow.”

Almost an year after this phone released in Russia and the grand unveiling at MWC 2014, it's now making news in India. Apparently, the phone was spotted on Flipkart for a few moment and later taken down. There's a good chance that the phone will start selling sometime soon.

What do you think will be its expected price? Any thought on this?
