Will Google Inc. Help Develop Wireless Networks In India?

The news that Google Inc. is going to help in funding and developing of wireless networks in emerging markets has spread like wildfire. The headlines broke out, when WSJ posted an article stating that Google has started getting in touch with regulators in countries such as South Africa and Kenya for allowing such wireless networks to be built for the masses of these developing countries. By building an ecosystem of all new microprocessors and low-cost Android smartphones powered to connect to the wireless networks, Google's effort would be to directed towards bringing various technologies together to build powerful networks and thereby connecting billions of people to the Internet's power. With areas such as the Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia under its radar, will India be the one to have access to improved Internet speeds in at least urban centers? There's no official word yet.

By teaming up with local telecom firms, equipment providers and by creating business models to support them, Google's strategy could be the one involving setting up of high-altitude platforms that will transmit signals over hundreds of square miles. Developing a satellite-based wireless network could even be on the company's action plan.

We can all understand how important it is for Google, primarily an online search giant even today, to rely on the existing network provider infrastructures, to provide its services to the masses. The company can't cash on its products and services completely because more than half of the population across the globe doesn't have efficient access to the Internet. So, by circumventing cable companies and wireless carriers and with an aim to have a control over every individual's internet connection, we can see that this is nothing but the best move for Google right now. As more and more people start using the Internet for what it's worth, they would be the ones driving Google's online advertising services forward.

Moreover, Google's expansion in these many countries would mean that the company gets important data for creating more and more personalized services and target individuals with more relevant advertising. WSJ has further reported that Google's Chief Executive, Larry Page has spearheaded secret research for years on alternative methods to provide more people with Internet access. By funding small-scale public ventures that make wireless networks use TV broadcast airwaves in the U.S, the tech giant is already taking baby steps ahead. Will this revolutionary step from Google affect India? Does India need the intervention of Google for a more powerful wireless network? Share your thoughts with us in comments.
