Why sony, samsung, nokia audio jacks differ?

I have this doubt for a long time so here it is:
Why many phone companies audio plugs dont work properly on common 3.5mm jack?
New age phones are equipped with 3.5mm audio jack but i had detected that many jacks dont accept other headsets and if accepted it should be partially inserted and left undisturbed for uninterupted music?
Does this makes sense?
Is this to make their product unique?

This may be due to the variations in TRRS (Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve ) connections. Afaik most of the manufactuers produce TRRS with Left Audio, Right Audio, Mic and Ground connection while a few produce Right Audio, Left Audio and Mic Ground. So may be due to these variations the earphone despite of being 3.5mm don't work properly on other devices.
