What is your opinion on online courses? Are they effective?

Almost on daily basis, we get queries about people asking for right course to join with an aim to get a job or get promotion etc. I've often wondered if people actually look online for courses. There are plenty of amazing courses available for under Rs. 1000 or Rs. 2000 ( ~ < $30) from the masters in their fields.

I recently took an online course on a programming topic and was thoroughly impressed. I even took a few advance guitar progressions class and it taught me plenty of things.

I'm wondering if we have fellow engineers who've taken a paid / free class online. Did you find them effective? Please share your opinion and feedback.

I am always on one or other of these courses. Quite OK at least for my purpose. I have no interest in career oriented ones as I have crossed that point long back. So I cannot comment on such courses. Science courses like Calculus, Astronomy, Mechanics and even English language are good.
