In general this refers to process control. Often chemical process control. Using information from strategically located transducers controllers, which may be physical (electrical, mechanical or hydraulic) or PLC based , micro controller based or full computer controlled systems which maintain optimum parameters. Advanced systems have auto debugging, calibrating and auto diagnostic functions. It is a very interesting multidisciplinary field.
