Vivo Launches Xplay 5 Elite With 6GB RAM Along With Xplay 5

Away from the glitz and glamour of the recently held Mobile World Congress, Vivo decided to launch its new smartphones, the Xplay 5 and Xplay 5 Elite at a launch event in China recently. The smartphones are presumably for sale in China for the meanwhile but we expect them to make their way across the globe soon. The highlight of the event was of course, the Xplay 5 Elite with its massive 6GB of RAM. While we wonder how much multitasking would you use in a smartphone to need 6GB of RAM, which is twice the amount of RAM in flagship smartphones from other companies but Vivo has nevertheless shown off its technical prowess with this move.

Apart from the massive 6GB of RAM there are other features which make the Vivo Xplay 5 Elite a flagship contender from the company. The Vivo Xplay 5 Elite takes inspiration from the Samsung Galaxy Edge 6 to have the screen curved on both sides. But the screen curvature does not have the same functionally or finesse as Samsung’s. The Vivo Xplay 5 Elite features a 5.43 inches Super AMOLED screen with Quad HD resolution (2,560 x 1,440 pixels) which means a pixels per inch figure of 540. Underneath the hood we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (MSM8996) SoC with quad-core configuration (dual-core 2.15 GHz Kryo & dual-core 1.6 GHz Kryo) CPU, Adreno 530 GPU and of course the massive 6GB LPDDR4 RAM. The internal memory of the Vivo Xplay 5 Elite stands at 128GB with no option of expanding that storage. In the photography front we have a 16-megapixel f/2.0 Sony IMX298-powered rear camera with phase detection auto-focus plus dual-tone LED flash and on the front we have an 8-megapixel f/2.4 selfie shooter. The Vivo Xplay 5 Elite runs Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) topped with the company’s Funtouch OS 2.6. The smartphone will be sold at CNY 4,288 or 44,129 INR.

On its younger brother, the Vivo Xplay 5 we find the same gorgeous display topped with Corning Gorilla Glass 4. Underneath the hood things get different as we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 (MSM8976) SoC with a chip configuration of quad-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A72 and quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 along with 4GB of RAM running a rather older Android 5.1 (Lollipop) topped with Funtouch OS 2.5.1 flavouring. The cameras and internal memory numbers remain the same as previous. Both the smartphones are equipped with fingerprint sensors and powered by user non-removable 3600mAh batteries. The Vivo Xplay 5 will be sold at CNY 3,698 or 38,066 INR.
