This Rugged Smartphone Has An Integrated Thermal Imaging Camera, Meet The Cat S60

Perhaps you won’t be aware but Caterpillar Inc or Cat, the fellows famous for their industrial equipment have a side business of building rugged smartphones. Their new creation the Cat S60 is rugged as well but it features an inbuilt camera that is way different than any other smartphone in the market. The Cat S60 is the first ever smartphone to feature an integrated thermal imaging camera courtesy of FLIR. By now you realise that Cat hasn’t built the S60 for commoners, it is targeting individuals who are employed in the building business. Cat says that they would use the smartphone’s FLIR thermal imaging camera to detect heat loss in buildings, insulation issues, moisture formation and overheated thermal appliances. The dedicated FLIR thermal camera can take still images and capture video. You can know the exact temperature of a surface by using the temperature spot meter. Since it’s a thermal camera it can also be used to see things in complete darkness as well which is cool feature.

While we will discuss the tech specs of the Cat S60 later in the article, we would now like to highlight the ruggedness of this Android Marshmallow smartphone. The Cat S60 has been built according to military specs. The Cat S60 can withstand drops onto concrete from up to 1.8 meters (approx 6 feet). The smartphone can be dunked into water up to depths of 5 meters and will still continue to work for an hour. The touchscreen that is protected by the new Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and can be used with wet fingers or while wearing gloves. The Cat S60 is dust-proof as well.

Coming to the tech specs, the Cat S60 is made out of strengthened die cast frame. The Cat S60 sports a 7-inch HD resolution display that may be a little contrast deficient judging from its huge tablet-like size. Underneath the hood we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 SoC that houses a 1.5 GHz octa-core ARM Cortex A53 CPU, Adreno 405 GPU and 3GB of RAM entrusted with the task of running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). Apart from the thermal imaging camera, you can find a normal 13MP camera with dual flash on the rear and a 5MP camera on the front. The Cat S60 features 4G connectivity and can deliver high quality audio with help of a 105dB speaker. The internal memory stands at 32GB and as of now we have no information if it is expandable with help of microSD cards.

Cat will unveil the Cat S60 to the public at the Mobile World Congress scheduled to be held at Barcelona from February 22nd. The smartphone is really on the expensive side, it costs $599 or Rs. 41047.
