The Light Phone Rises Away From The Smartphone Crowd

A developer-designer duo - Kaiwei Tang and Joe Hollier came together as a part of Google's inaugural 30 Weeks incubator program to build a revolutionary new device called the 'Light Phone'. True to its name, this phone takes the smart away from smartphone and brings to you a minimal device that does what it is supposed to do - make & take calls. The media is already abuzz with the news of how the generation today needs a digital detox and how disconnected we all have become thanks to the smartphone frenzy. The uniquely designed Light Phone is designed in the size of a credit card in such a way that one can use it as little as possible. Sounds weird? Well, wait till you take tour of the features of the all new Light Phone.

Featuring a 20 day battery life, the Light Phone is a 4 mm thick device that weighs close to nothing. It can be used for calling, tell you the current time and set up to 10 speed dial contacts. There are no notifications and absolutely no apps. In a bright white body, the phone has been made so compact that it fits inside your back pocket or even your wallet.

A Kickstarter campaign for the Light Phone has already gone live and they have promised the backers the rare opportunity to own a Light Phone with a $100 pledge. Take a look at the nice video to see the phone in action:

The beauty of Light Phone is in the fact that it’s timeless and will not need to be replaced every year. The unlocked prepaid phone is also an ideal option as emergency backup, or an introduction to phones for children.

I call this idea stupid, it is too expensive. If the makers had priced this at $20 or even $30 it would have been fine but buying this for $100 is not my cup of tea. The pairing of phone to forward calls is just a gimmick. Yes, everyone with a smartphone has a backup phone on him/her in case the primary one runs out of charge. But those Nokias cost between $20 to $25 and come with the same amount of battery backup and hell of a lot feature than these phones.
