At the IFA 2014 event, Sony Mobile Communications has launched two new Android 4.4 KitKat OS running smartphones called the Sony Xperia Z3 and Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. The flagship series from the company comes in two form-factor smartphones - A 5.2-inch one and the other 4.6-inch compact version. Apart from the screen size difference, the phones have very little variation in terms of the features offered. So let us take a look down the technical specifications list to find out what's hot and what's not with the two newest and biggest competitors in the Android market.
Well, looks like Sony engineers have been busy in coming up with a super-slim design that fits well inside a rounded aluminium frame. While the Xperia Z3 weighs just 152 grams and is 7.3 mm thick, the Xperia Z3 Compact weighs just 129 grams and is 8.6 mm thick. The phones are available in 4 color options - black, white, copper and silver green. The engine running these phones is a Snapdragon 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Quad-core processors along side a Adreno 330 graphics unit.
Sony boasts off saying that they are offering "the world’s best camera and camcorder in a smartphone" with their Xperia Z3 series. From the specs, we find out that there's a 20.7 megapixel camera on the rear end of both of these phones that comes with auto focus, 8x digital zoom and is equipped with Sony Exmor RS for mobile image sensor. What's more, the camera supports 4K video recording. On the front side of the phone, there's a 2.2 megapixel camera capable of capturing HD 1080p videos and having support for Pulsed LED flash.
Other than the camera, Sony also feels great about calling these phones the 'audio powerhouse'. Sony's latest DSEE HX technology at play for the first time in the Z3 series coupled with Digital Noise Cancelling technology make it a great companion for listening songs on the commute. The phone's front-facing stereo speakers support S-Force Front Surround.
Thanks to a new features called the 'PS Remote Play', you can attach your PS4 DualShock4 game controller to the smartphones and start playing all the PS games from anywhere. Moreover, you can actually take the phones with you wherever you want as they are adorned with the highest waterproof rating (IP65/68)3 and are both dust-tight. That said, on the connectivity front - the phones support: aGPS, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GLONASS, Native USB tethering, USB High speed 2.0 and Micro USB support and Wi-Fi and WiFi Hotspot functionality.
Other than these, let us now take a look at some of the individual specifications -
