Sony PlayStation Now Accessible On Samsung Smart TV Without The Need Of Consoles

One year ago, Sony had #-Link-Snipped-# the availability of a cloud based gaming facility called PlayStation Now, which allowed the users to access PlayStation (PS) games without a console. Since then, the rumours of merging of television sets and gaming consoles have been floating around. Putting an end to such rumours, South Korean MNC Samsung Electronics officially announced that it will launch a Smart TV in 2015 which will be capable of playing more than 200 PS3 games using Sony’s PS Now service.

The users won’t need a console to play the games. All they need to do is to access the pre-installed PlayStation Now app on the Samsung Smart TV. For playing the games, the users will need to buy a wireless DualShock 4 controller which is sold separately. The players would require a good internet connection since the games will be streamed from cloud. They will have a complete access. It means that besides playing the game, the users can earn trophies, save their progress on clouds and even play with other gamers. In the announcement however, it was not mentioned clearly whether or not cross-platform compatibility will be present.

The users will have to pay the usual rental charges of PS Now which might be somewhere in between $1.99 to $19.99 per rental. Sony, in the announcement said that the structuring of the prices will be made clear at a later point of time. Since PS Now is available only in US and Canada, users of the Smart TV in other countries won’t be able to access this service. However, considering the current trend of expansion, it will be no surprise if the app becomes available in UK as well. A screening of the new TV will be shown in Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2015 which is to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Executive VP of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Masayasu Ito said that their vision at Sony is to open the world of PS to people by offering service on devices they use every day. He also added that teaming up with Samsung is an important step towards this dream as they can reach a broader audience who may not necessarily own a PS console.
