Skimo Allows You To Skim Through Hours Of TV Shows In Minutes

Former Motorola employees Vasu Srinivasan and Dave Penny have come up with a video summarisation technology called Skimo that can identify important parts of any long video sequence and bring you the important portions. With the help of this technology it would be possible to watch an entire episode of a TV show in two minutes. Skimo allows you to watch box sets in just a few minutes | Daily Mail Online speculates that with the help of Skimo TV an entire season of the famous drama series Breaking Bad could be watched in 20 minutes.


#-Link-Snipped-# or Skim The Video technology works in the following manner. Instead of analysing the speech in a scene the software analyses scenes, frames and shots. The developers at Skimo say that most filmmakers follow a formula consciously or unconsciously to shoot an important scene in a movie or a TV show. The key scenes are brighter, faster and louder than other parts of the film. Skimo Engine searches for these parameters in a scene and stitches them together. Since the system does not rely on the dialogue being spoken in the scene its makers claim that it can be used to summarise video in any language.

The company has already made video summaries of certain episodes of the Cheers spin-off, Frasier. The team is also in talks with NBC, Discovery Channel and the Spanish Telemundo to make trimmed versions of their shows. In the future they are planning to build an iPhone app that can generate summary of any long YouTube video and send it to your smartphone. A physical device called as the STV 1000 - Skimo Engine Virtual Appliance for Video Providers will also be available for content providers.
