Sesame Enable Smartphone For The Disabled, Because Touch Is Overrated

An Israeli startup named 'Sesame Enable' has designed a touch-free phone for the physically disabled people and is quickly taking the world by storm. A team of three, Oden Ben Dov, the CEO, whose expertise lies in computer vision & mobile development, Giora Livne, the Co-Founder, an electrical power engineer who served as Naval Officer for 15 years and Vlad Ostrovski, the current VP of R&D at Sesame Enable, came together to build the Sesame Enable smartphone. Giora who became a quadriplegic after an accident, is the one who conceptualised the creation of such a smartphone that doesn't rely on touch to operate. Today, the Sesame Enable phone can cater to the people with various disabilities and the ones diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Chord Injuries and Multiple Sclerosis. Thanks to the app that the Sesame Enable team has built, this smart phone can do everything any other phone does without the necessity of a touch input.

Using gesture recognition as a key to create a touch-free phone, the team has built the Sesame software technology that lets anyone access & operate the smartphone entirely through head movements and voice control, without the need of any custom hardware.

If you order the Sesame-powered phone, in the package there will be a USB cables, stereo earbuds and a Google Nexus 5 phone preloaded with a software layer such that it can be operated touch-free out-of-the-box. Not only is this smartphone a boon for the ones with hand impairments so as to enable them independent access to smartphone, but if go further and envision a bigger picture, this technology can be used by the disabled individuals to taste the Internet of Things technology and have applications in a smart home too. This means that the disabled people can also control their home's thermostats, air-conditioning, curtain shades, lights etc. with as little movement as possible. (and more importantly, without depending on anyone).

The technology behind Sesame phone, involves computer vision algorithms, voice commands and movement tracking. For the past two years, the team has been working on getting the Sesame Phone ready for production. The team has experienced a great demand for their device. The interesting part is that, even children can use it and the team believes that their most dedicated users should be kids. Take a look at the following video.

If you know someone with a disability, you can nominate them for a free Sesame Touch-Free smartphone. The Sesame phone works by tracking small head movements which are translated into a “cursor” that appears on the screen of the phone. So, anyone who can move their head even slightly should be able to operate the Sesame phone. Using the Sesame software layer, users can make phone calls, send texts, browse the internet, watch videos on Youtube, socialize on Facebook and even play Angry Birds and Candy Crush.
We are in love with the technology and believe that it should soon enter mass production. What are your thoughts on the same? Share with us in comments below
