Sensimed Triggerfish: Look Into My Eyes!

Glaucoma is the forerunner in diseases causing total blindness around the world. Glaucoma is caused due to damaged optic nerve which in turn is affected by the increase in eye pressure. This is called as intra ocular pressure (OC). What makes glaucoma deadly is that there are no initial symptoms. The disease just strikes anytime and it becomes too late to cure it. The patients diagnosed with Glaucoma have to be careful and are kept under observation by doctors.

[IMG]Our eyes are filled with a fluid called as aqueous humor. Continuous production of this fluid in the back of the eye helps to keep a required pressure in human eye. Pressure is build up in the eye when there is a blockage to the outflow of the fluid. This is the reason for OC and cause of Glaucoma.Till now, doctors used device known as tonometer which needed the patient to be admitted for about a day. Imagine the fate of the patient if he is woken up after few hours during the night to be checked for the OC pressure in the eye.

Sensimed, a Swiss company, has launched an integrated Microsystems device labeled Sensimed Triggerfish to help the Glaucoma patients. This device will monitor the intraocular pressure in real time. The device is in the form of a disposable soft silicone contact lens and equipped with Micro Electrico Mechanical System (MEMS) and telemetry microprocessor. The lens has a strain gauge which measures the corneal curvature in the eye, 24 hours, and transmits the information through embedded telemetry microprocessor to portable reader. Patients can be monitored by their doctors with a great scrutiny as the same information can be relayed to their doc’s pc through internet system.

The lens is powered by a loop antenna which is strapped to the patients face. The antenna is used both as a power transmitter and signal receiver. The strain gauges transmit the reading to the antenna which in turn transmits to the receiver and the monitoring system. The lens is disposable and can be worn only for 24 hours. The lens is to be worn by the patient once or twice during the year. During this time, the doctor monitors the pressure in the eye and diagnoses likewise. The amount and time of medication required is decide by the doctor can be decided to a higher precision value.

The lens is commercially available in Europe and permission to distribute in USA is awaited. Presently, the lens is used only on the patients who are already diagnosed with Glaucoma or have a strong family history.

Similar kind of lens to monitor the glucose level in diabetic patients has been developed by Babak Parviz at University of Washington in Seattle.
