Ricoh Developing Brighter, Full Color E-Paper

E-papers are integral parts of our lives in this age of technology. The basic idea behind an e-paper is to reflect light like ordinary paper that makes it comfortable to read. In order to make e-papers exactly like ordinary paper, so that you don't experience fading image in direct sunlight, Ricoh is developing a brighter e-paper that also has the ability to display colors.
The new e-paper has layers of electrochromic materials that turn magenta, yellow and cyan from their transparent state. The newly developed prototype has 3.5 inch QVGA display. It sports 70% reflectivity along with a pixel density of 113.6 ppi. Its color reproduction range is 35%, that is higher than that of a newspaper. In this display the electrodes used are active TFTs, that help to achieve all colors with single TFT.

This new e-paper is 2.5 times brighter than the e-papers currently available in the market, that makes it less annoying to read in direct sunlight. Ricoh is still testing the product and they plan to take it up to 10 inches. They are also working on more stable driving and faster response.
