Latency is a big issue in current communication systems. Ask a gamer who lost a game, or a skype user who couldn't hear a complete conversation, you will know the pain it can cause! Researchers from Europe along with European Commission, Alcatel-Lucent and BT have designed a new mechanism, that can help to reduce the latency in the internet system.
The project named Reducing Internet Transport Latency (RITE), started in November, 2012 at University of Aberdeen and is now ready to be presented to the world. Normally, when people face latency or delay in their internet connection, they try to increase the bandwidth. The researchers think that the bandwidth doesn't need to be faster, instead the delay that should be less. They are trying to achieve this through a revised Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and by changing the way networks routers handle buffering.

The change in the TCP is to make it more compatible with applications that don't transfer a huge amount of data. They are also changing the timer mechanism that help to recover a lost packet during transmission. The behavior of network routers also causes delay when TCP fills up their memory with buffers. Controlling this can also help to reduce the latency. The researchers will present their findings in Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meeting in Florida next month.
