Project Loon Update: Google Collaborates With French Space Agency
Google has teamed up with French space agency Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) for its ambitious Project Loon. The tech-giant launched this project to connect the world by providing internet to the remote areas with the help of floating balloons. Project Loon is handled by Google[x], a semi-secret facility dedicated for Google’s highly advanced projects, usually called as “moonshotsâ€. Though Google is yet to comment on the recent collaboration, CNES explained that they are delighted to work together and to provide new momentum to research efforts in this area.
Since its commencement in 2011, Project Loon has seen considerable advancements. The balloons used to provide internet have survived more than 100 days in the air, which is believed to be a milestone. These balloons, powered by solar panels would be present about 18-20 km above the ground in the stratosphere and provide connection links that could be received by LTE-enabled phones. Google could now use CNES expertise in balloon technology to power the world with internet. CNES will contribute in the development of next-generation balloons and analysis of balloon flight.
It is worth noting that CNES first thought that the Project Loon was impractical and hence researchers were not ready in making the collaboration. However Google had some wonderful ideas that will be beneficial to CNES and managed the deal. It would be interesting to see further advancements in this project.
