Peugeot's Hybrid Air - The Full-Hybrid Gasoline Car Is Launching By 2016

In an attempt to build a truly eco-friendly car, PSA Peugeot Citroën, the French automobile manufacturer has come up with a new technology called 'Hybrid Air' that combines Gasoline internal combustion engine with compressed air storage. The company believes that their innovation is taking us towards the astounding 2 litre/100 km fuel consumption rate. Whoa. Their amazing technology makes the powertrain adapts to different driving styles by adjusting to one of the three modes: Air, Gasoline, Combined.

The world is facing the huge challenges of reducing pollutants and green house gases. By bringing a car which is equipped with a fully hybrid technology, that's affordable to the masses, Peugeot aims at delivering the best performance automobile at price that doesn't burn pockets. 'Hybrid Air' is here to do just that. By combining the tested technologies: a petrol engine, a unit to store energy in the form of compressed air, a hydraulic motor-pump assembly and an automatic transmission working with an epicyclic gear train, Hybrid Air can choose to operate in 3 different modes: ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle), petrol internal combustion and combined.

The Hybrid Air car can offer up to 45% fuel savings in city driving, while not compromising on anything. The vehicle's space including boot and cabin is not hampered. The technology is applicable to every passenger car and LCV segments, and is intended for the B (82 bhp internal combustion engines), C (110 bhp internal combustion engines) and LCV segments. With Bosch and Faurecia as its strategic partners, Peugeot has developed this technology in partnership with the French State.

The gasoline power mode is activated on road and highway driving and offers beter acoustiv level than a standard vehicle. Whereas, the Air power mode is activated when the car runs below 70 kph and offers maxium fuel saving with acoustic comfort. With the facility for 'Brake Energy Regeneration', the car's storage system recovers energy while decelerating or braking - and this works in all the three modes.

According to the company, we can expect the car to deliver an average of 117 miles a gallon and the technology will be fitted on B-segment models starting in 2016. The folks over at Peugeot have put together a video for the same. Take a look -

Update: This reminds us of the much talked about TATA Air Car Advances A Step Towards Reality - Brings Smiles To Indians. The last time we checked it was being developed by TATA Motors and Luxemburg based Motor Development International (MDI) in India.
