Pebble Time Smartwatch Launches On Kickstarter

The big daddy of smartwatches is back in a new avatar. Pebble Technologies has announced and begun the crowd funding of its new smartwatch. The new smartwatch titled Pebble Time has acquired six times its funding goal of $500,000 within hours of launch. With 31 days to go, we are sure it will break the previous record set for the highest funds raised on Kickstarter, which was set by the original Pebble smartwatch. The makers of Pebble have improved the smartwatch is numerous ways, the biggest improvement being the display. Instead of a power sapping OLED or LCD panel, the Pebble Time has a color e-paper display. The company argues that by sticking with e-paper display they can guarantee a better standby time, in this case its 7 days.

Pebble Time

Staying true to their origins, Pebble Technologies has not adopted popular smartwatch platforms like Android Wear or Tizen. The Pebble Time features a new timeline interface. Instead of having a clogged up home screen with apps, new Pebble organises notifications, news, reminders and events chronologically instead of trapping them in various apps. There are three buttons on the Pebble that let you see past, present and future information from apps. The redesigned app menu features new app faces with “glanceable” content. Pebble has improved the performance of the smartwatch by dynamically loading and caching apps as needed by the user.

Pebble Time 3

Pebble Technologies have added a microphone to the Pebble Time that lets users send voice replies to incoming notifications from apps like SMS, Hangouts, Gmail, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp on Android and Gmail for iOS. Pebble is promising that it will enable voice replies for more apps soon. The microphone will also help users take short voice memos too. The Pebble Time is 20% thinner than the original Pebble and it has a curved body to fit your wrists better. Watch customisation becomes easier as the Pebble Time accepts any standard 22mm watch band. The Pebble Time is water resistant and features vibrating alerts.

Pebble Time 2

The developer community is being encouraged to adopt the Rich C SDK for apps and watchfaces along with a new emulator, APIs for accelerometer, compass, Bluetooth messaging, background tasks, GPS and HTTP request, Color API, Timeline APIs and more. Owners of the old Pebble will be glad to know that they too will be getting the Timeline UI in the future. The Pebble Time is available only on Kickstarter at prices starting at $159. The retail price is expected to be $199. If you want your hands on one, we suggest you to do it fast as the limited cheaper early bird watches are disappearing with every second.
