Panasonic Enters Curved TV Market With 4K UHD Models

Panasonic, which was initially hesitant to enter the curved TV market seems to have succumbed to the pressure. Yesterday, Panasonic announced that they have added the curved screen to the VIERA TV line-up and is headed for flagship to the CR850, CR730 and CR430 series. This move by Panasonic is no doubt in response to the great sales of curved TVs from Samsung and LG in 2014. The great news besides curved nature of the TV is that all the variants are 4K Ultra-HD (UHD) models of Panasonic. This means that you can enjoy the greater sense of depth and immersive experience courtesy touch screen and great clarity and awesome resolution courtesy 4K. The top-end curved TV will be the CR850 series TV whose both 55-inch and 65-inch variants will receive the curved screens.

Now, CR850 doesn’t have the normal 4K but instead both its variants have 4K Pro. It means that the TVs will have 98% Digital Cinema Initiative (used in film making) gamut coverage and an 8,000 point colour lookup table (LUT). In layman’s terms, it means that the TV will depict accurate colours at any brightness level. Panasonic claims that this ‘accuracy of colours’ is due to the Wide Colour Phosphur technology used in the TV which offers ‘brighter’ whites and ‘deeper’ blacks unlike the Quantum Dot technology used by Panasonic’s rival companies.

Besides CR850 series, no other TV will get the 4K pro technology but all of them will work on the Firefox OS-based Smart TV operating system which was unveiled in CES in January. Panasonic is the first to adopt the open standards smart TV OS. It already has an app for popular services like Netflix and Amazon Instant Video and it seems that Panasonic’s plan is to allow third party developers to make apps for the OS.

The pricing and availability were not revealed by Panasonic in the press release. However, the speculations in the market is that the TVs will go on sale somewhere between May and June 2015.

Leading display manufacturers such as LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony have launched their 3D TVs and smartphone products in the market. The surge in 3D entertainment content would drive the adoption of 3D TVs, smartphones and monitors. By 2020, more than 50% of the TVs are expected to be 3D compatible. As a result of which, the TV application would continue to dominate the market.
