Panasonic 4K Blu-ray Player Is A World's First - Taken Off Wraps At CES 2015

It's CES time and as expected, innovations have been pouring in from all sides. Japanese electronics MNC and a household name when it comes to televisions, Panasonic is not staying away from the race of inventions. Manufacturer of Ultra-HD (UHD) TVs have been asking the content providers for a long time to escalate the quality of their content so that they can show it on their expensive TVs. Panasonic has taken the primary step towards it. In a press conference at CES 2015, Panasonic announced the world’s first working template of Blu-ray player for UHD TVs.

Blu-ray players in use today play upto 1080p content. With the increasing popularity and demand of 4K TVs it was important that the Blu-ray standard is updated and Panasonic has done just that. Although streaming devices like Netflix 4K do provide some material for 4K devices but they are limited by their bandwidth. Panasonic’s Blu-ray player might be overcome this drawback. A prototype of the player will be on display at CES 2015 from 6th to 9th January.

Right now, the details about the Blu-ray player is pretty sparse but some information which is available is as follows. The prototype shows amalgamation of video processing and optical disk drives which is something on which Panasonic has been working for years. It is this integration that will make it possible to replicate a high resolution video like 4K (3840x2160 pixels). Additionally, Panasonic has assured that the player will support latest technology like High Dynamic Range (HDR). The support for HDR implies that the colour reproduction will be of great quality and the playback will be at a high data rate of upto 100 Mbps. Inarguably, this is major leap forward in the field of 4K televisions.

Further details about the player were not revealed by Panasonic. Neither did they give any details about the pricing and availability, although last year in September, a spokesperson from Blu-ray association at IFA had said that such a product will be available by the end of 2015. Moreover, besides unveiling of the Blu-ray player, in the press conference, Panasonic also stated that it is now a member of the new UHD Alliance, an organisation that wants to create a new standard for next-generation of video technologies.
