OPPO R5 - The World’s Thinnest Smartphone Arriving Soon In India

China based electronics company OPPO Electronics had recently in October launched a smartphone named OPPO R5. The phone broke Gionee’s record as the world’s thinnest smartphone when it released. OPPO recently unveiled the good news that this phone will hit the Indian market in December. Evidently for the purpose of promotion of the brand, OPPO has also decided that phone will be atleast 18 dollars cheaper in India than those in other countries. The price of the phone will be somewhere around 25,000 INR to 30,000 INR.

OPPO R5 has managed to put in a decent functionality in a phone that measures only 4.85mm in thickness. The specs are quite good as R5 has a 5.2 inch full HD screen and 64 bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor. It has got 2 GB RAM and LTE connectivity. Additionally, it boasts of a good 13 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front camera both with the aperture of f/2. OPPO was even able to find the space for a 2000 mAh battery inside the thin phone. All of this functionality comes at the weight of a mere 155 gm.

Obviously, the brags of being the world’s thinnest phone also has its drawbacks. In order to accomplish the design objectives, some functionality had to be removed from the phone. It has only 16 GB internal storage memory with no option for expansion through SD cards as there is no space for a microSD slot on the phone. Besides these, there is no 3.5mm headphone connector and the only possible way is to connect via a Bluetooth headphone.

Even though there are these hitches, the overall design of the phone is appreciable. The metallic edge is nicely polished to give an easy grip. Thanks to the use of stainless steel rather than the aluminum alloy, R5 overcomes the weakness of most of the thin phones: that of being easily bent. Moreover, the drawback of slim phones is that they expose more heat to the surface. OPPO R5 incapacitates this problem by using a phase-shifting material, a feature used generally in modern PC motherboards, to help maintain the temperature of the internal components.

phone thickness at 4.85 mm is just mind boggling; appreciate all the efforts by Chinese companies OPPO (and Gionee too with slim phones).

Still struggling to understand if the *Slimmest* tag is worthy enough to features like SD card expansion, Headphone connector, better battery??
