NVIDIA Announces NVIDIA Drive Automotive Platform With NVIDIA Drive CX & NVIDIA Drive PX

In #-Link-Snipped-# we mentioned that NVIDIA plans to use the Tegra X1 chip not just on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets but also on autonomous machines and automotive applications. Kick-starting the work in this direction the company has unveiled the NVIDIA Drive platform that provides computational power to cars of tomorrow. NVIDIA Drive consists of NVIDIA Drive PX and NVIDIA Drive CX. NVIDIA Drive PX platform aims to provide computational power to advanced driver assistance systems on cars which shall pave way for more autonomous cars. The Drive PX that is powered by Tegra X1 will be able to handle information from up to 12 cameras mounted on any automobile. NVIDIA equips the Drive PX system with 10GB of DRAM, learning techniques and surround Computer Vision (CV) technology.

Normally camera systems on cars use fisheye lenses which results in warped images on the driver’s control screen but the surround Computer Vision (CV) technology stitches the images better and even manages to render the car in real-time. New learning techniques not just help the car judge the distance and speed of other vehicles but also identify them as well. The Drive PX systems will be able to distinguish between an ambulance and a delivery truck and a parked car that is about to pull out on to traffic and respond accordingly. The best feature of Drive PX is the Auto-Valet. The system is able to build a 3D map of objects in the vicinity with help of techniques like structure-from-motion (SFM) and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) by accumulating data from four surround-view cameras that cover the immediate area around the car. More cameras help it judge cross-traffic viewpoints and give it a greater coverage area. All of this helps the car to judge obstacles faster and park itself without any user input.

Next we have the NVIDIA Drive CX platform that brings cutting-edge graphics to in car systems. The digital cockpit computer has a single DIN form factor that makes it easy to fit on any car. It features a full software stack from BSP to optimized automotive middleware, integrated with reference applications. Since the company has enough expertise in graphics, it is also planning to revolutionise the car’s dashboard. The company’s Drive Studio is going to provide customisable instrument readings for automakers. For example, if you buy a Rolls Royce, you will get a wooden coloured speedometer and to match your futuristic BMW-i series car you can have a carbon fibre accentuated odometer.

Nvidia Drive CX

Finally the company has confirmed the existence of Android Auto in #-Link-Snipped-# which will be unveiled Google Android Auto To Debut In 2015 - An Unveiling At CES Might Be On Cards. It says that Drive CX works perfectly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Automakers like Audi, Honda, BMW, Tesla, Maserati and more have signed up #-Link-Snipped-# of NVIDIA, so we hope to see NVIDIA equipped cars in the market soon.
