Nippon Moon - The World's Biggest Ferris Wheel Coming Up In Japan

Nippon Moon would soon become the world's biggest Ferris Wheel and is currently under development. The Giant Observation Wheel (GOW) as it's called, has been designed by UNStudio. The designers of the wheel haven't yet disclosed the overall height of the wheel; but have dropped hints that it'll be 2x the size of London Eye (@135 meters), which is world's third largest Ferris Wheel after Singapore Flyer (1st @ 165 meters) & Star of Nanchang (2nd @ 160 meters).

The construction of the wheel has been commissioned by Japanese Ferris Wheel Investment Co. Ltd., and being designed in association with Arup, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries & Experientia. The Nippon Moon will have a total of 32 capsules in single & double-deck configuration. One of the biggest attraction of the Nippon Moon will be the capsules with Augmented Reality screens. These displays will act as informative screens to provide Google Glass like experience to users. Van Berkel, founder of Dutch architectural design studio, says that the overall experience will be quite richer than what you'll see without AR displays.

The wheel will take about 40 minutes to complete rotation. Because of the sheer size of the wheel, structural constraints have been designed by Mitsubishi & Arup. Each of the 32 capsule is expected to offer a different viewing experience to the passengers. They will be able to communicate with passengers in other capsules & also share their experiences in real time. The structural design will also eliminate queuing with an active system that resembles airplane boarding system. A dedicated GOW app will inform the passengers how long will they have to wait before getting on-board.

It'll be interesting to see which Japanese city will be chosen for this project. That said, this place would definitely be on our 'places to visit' once in a lifetime.
