MIT Graduates Develop Jolt Sensor To Detect Concussion In Realtime

Whether you play sports like football, soccer, wrestling or basketball, there is a chance of having a concussion caused by a bump or jolt to the head. Concussion is a common type of traumatic brain injury where the brain moves quickly back and forth after receiving a blow to the head. Negligence to minor knocks and injuries or lack of proper attention increases the probability that the concussion may become worse. In order to detect such head injuries in realtime, MIT graduates Benjamin Harvatine and Seth Berg developed a novel device called Jolt Sensor.

Sensor

The Jolt Sensor is a small clip enclosed by a soft rounded silicone rubber exterior that can be clipped to a headband, helmet, headgear or any other head-worn athletic equipment. The sensor vibrates to alert the sportsperson whenever there is a sign of concussion. Jolt Sensor is fully waterproofed so that it can stand up to dust, sweat and rain. Having a multi-week battery life, the sensor is recharged through a standard micro USB port.

Jolt

Another discernible feature of the sensor is that it can be wirelessly connected to parents' and coaches' Android or iOS smartphones. The parents, coaches, or team manager can track the children/sportspersons in the event by using Bluetooth as the range of this connectivity is over a hundred yards. The app’s built-in cognitive test and concussion symptom checklist also helps the physio to evaluate the impact on the athlete’s brain. And, if there is a dangerous impact then the player is sent to a medical professional. The doctor can refer to the data collected by the app and sensor, which is stored in the cloud, to diagnose a concussion.

The alpha version of the iOS mobile app is developed and has been tested successfully. The Kickstarter campaign for the project has already begun and if it is successful then they will start developing Android version of the app soon.
