We engineers grossly lack social skills and have always had a hard time catching people's fake smiles. You may try catching the fake smile from the following photograph, and answer in comment. But technology can help us fix that problem as well. Thanks to research engineers at MIT who've developed a computer algorithm that can correctly catch a fake smile and identify a genuine smile. The team found out that computer algorithms are more accurate in catching human emotions like delight and frustration than us, the humans.

In their experiment, a group of people was asked to fill out long forms and when they clicked on the 'Submit' button, the form just disappeared; causing acute frustration in the individuals. The computer recorded their smiles and compared it with the smiles upon watching a cute baby laughing. Computer could correctly identify the 'frustrated smile' and a 'genuine smile'.

The immediate application of this technology, as we see, would be in 'Face Unlock' feature of your mobile phones or desktop computers. Computer may ask you to be happy and smile from the bottom of your heart before it could let you log in. Now, that's quite interesting, right?
