Meet Splash Drone: The Fully Waterproof Camera Drone Currently Seeking Funds On Kickstarter

Urban Drones have unveiled a new quad-copter on Kickstarter that can land and float on water and even take off from it. The new drone titled Splash Drone can help users shoot videos above, on and even below water. Underneath the Splash Drone we find a two axis waterproof camera gimbal with a GoPro mount that can be submerged underwater. The live video from the GoPro is fed directly into an integrated video transmitter that can transmit the video signal for up to a mile to a 7inch video monitor with 5.8 GHz video receiver. Users of the Splash Drone can fly the drone with the included 2.4 GHz radio controller or they can use an Android or iOS app for autonomous flights. The Splash Drone has three flight modes. The first one is called the ‘Follow Me’ mode in which the Splash Drone hovers and follows the pilot wherever he/she goes. The second one involves autonomous missions in which a drone pilot can program coordinates of the waypoints and ask the Splash Drone to follow the fight path. The third and final is of course the manual mode. The Splash Drone is able offer 17 minutes of flight time on a single charge.

Apart from its flight and live video transmitting capabilities, the Splash Drone is able to carry and drop a two pound payload. This feature can be used by rescuers to drop life saving rations to those stranded in the ocean. Vital stats of the Splash Drone such as battery voltage, altitude, location and distance are constantly transmitted to the remote control. The Splash Drone has an emergency flare adapter that allows you to fly a flare for up to fifteen minutes at heights of up to 300 metres. If the Splash Drone loses radio contact it can still manage to return to the take off location by itself.

With every Splash Drone, you get a 2.4GHz radio controller, a GoPro dive case with video output cable, a payload release mechanism, an emergency flare system, an aluminium travel case, self tightening carbon fibre propellers, a 4200mAh battery and its charger. The waterproof gimbal, the video monitor and receiver, the iOS app and a GoPro camera are optional extras. The team from Urban Drones is currently seeking funds of $17,500 to begin mass producing the Splash Drone. Donors who pledge an amount of $799 or more will be able to get their hands on the Splash Drone by June 2015. The estimated retail price of the Splash Drone is expected to be $1199.
