World's First Liquid Nano Laser For Medical Diagnostics

The new laser technology developed by researchers from Northwestern University promises a new form of 'Lab-on-a-Chip Could Help You Do Multiple Blood Tests Instantly On The Go for critical medical diagnosis. It's the first liquid nanoscale laser that tunable in real time, which means that the researchers can easily and quickly create variety of colors. The concept can be understood by imagining a laser pointer that can change the color just by changing the liquid inside it, eliminating the need of a new laser pointer for every new color desired.

In addition to real-time color change, the liquid nanolaser has one more advantage - it's very easy and simple to make as compared to other nanolasers and it can operate at room temperature. The nanoscopic lasers were first demonstrated back in 2009, but remained confined to the research laboratories till today. The medicine and military industry has shown a great interest in these nanolasers in the recent times.

Teri W. Odom, the lead researcher of the study said that her lab likes to discover new materials, structures and innovative ways to put them together in order to create things that were not imagined before. She believes that her study represents practical engineering advance for controlled light from nanoscopic sources. Odom explains that the nanolaser in the study is not a laser pointer, but a tiny laser device on a chip. The biggest advantages of these tiny lasers are that they can be deployed on the chip as source of light for the optoelectronic ICs and also as optical data storage devices. In addition, these lasers operate at one wavelength and are a lot faster than conventional lasers as they are made from metals.
