ISRO shares official Facebook & Twitter pages in a move against fake profiles

The Indian Space Research Organisation said that with the rise of fake Facebook and Twitter profiles about ISRO, the chances of spread of unauthentic information increase. On Monday, it warned people against forged profiles about its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) on social media websites. Stressing on the point that it was not responsible for any content hosted on any of these pages, the space agency said the impersonation was a serious offense and warned of stern legal action against their administrators if they were not immediately taken down. ISRO now has its own #-Link-Snipped-# and #-Link-Snipped-#. Interestingly, the new official Facebook page saw 5,233 hits, in the first eight hours following its launch.

"It has come to our notice that a number of pages in the social media are floating in our name, department of space and Mangalyaan (Mars), which have no authenticity," the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said in a statement. According to ISRO, the aim of these new pages is to maximize public outreach, provide mission updates and create public awareness about mission objectives and accomplishments of key programs. One of the major announcements made on the accounts immediately after their launch was that the Geo Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) will be launched at Sriharikota at 4.18pm on January 5, 2014.

A fortnight ahead of the maiden Mars mission, the space agency started an official page on Facebook October 22 titled 'ISRO's Mars Orbiter Mission' (facebook.com/isromom) to provide real time authentic information. We checked for some of the fake ISRO Accounts that look very real and authentic. And we were astonished to find many. Some of them include - #-Link-Snipped-#, #-Link-Snipped-#, twitter.com/Mangalyaan1, twitter.com/ISRO_India and twitter.com/ISROBhuvan.

We at CrazyEngineers warn you against liking or following fake accounts and ask you to be 100% sure about authenticity before sharing such content on social media. News is for the masses and social media is a wild platform that has to be used with cautiousness. Will you go ahead and check the official pages for ISRO immediately? Share your comments on the fake accounts with us below.
