Is modern Engineering not enough 'Hands On'?

Quote: A line commonly heard by engineers is, “Make it idiot-proof.” This has led to new user-friendly and plug-and-play equipment, which is nice to have, but if a person doesn’t understand what the button they are pushing does, it can have negative repercussions. Endquote
The old generation of engineers with grease on their hands (and face) with all sorts of tools in bulging pockets seems to be a dying breed. Is creativity being given the 'go bye'? Is curiosity taking a back seat?
What do CEans think?
