Internet Of Things based Smart Energy Meter

Project Abstract / Summary : The project is about making the energy meter smart by having a continuous automatic communication between the consumer’s energy meter and the utility. The energy meter reading is communicated to the utility and to the consumer via internet. Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer onto which the programming (Python) is uploaded is used for internet connectivity.

The project is based on pay-as-you-go model which is analogous to that of prepaid mobile recharge. The recharge is made through the consumer’s E-Wallet. The recharged amount will be cut down as per the conventional price rate and will be continuously updated to the consumer by the LCD connected to the Raspberry Pi. A warning text message is sent to the consumer’s registered mobile number at threshold balance prior to the balance getting nil. Threshold balance depends on the rate of usage of power and can be set by the user as per his convenience.

Mobile app for the same is tentative for an easy and portable display.

There are block diagrams and flowcharts but it won't open as the URL would be different for different computers/laptops. None of our block diagrams and flowcharts are on internet.
However the video shows the expected output of our project.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Advantageous to the consumers:
i) Can set the monthly electricity billing budget.
ii) No need to wait for the month end bill.
iii) They know exactly how much power is being utilized.
iv) Efficient use of energy.

Advantageous to the utility:
i) Less labor cost. There is no need of human operator to go to the consumers address to take down the reading.
ii) Remote access of the meter reading.
iii) Optimum generation cost, raw material, losses and hence increase in revenue.
iv) The readings recorded can be used by R&D department.

Also, the project is very apt with government "Smart Cities" scheme and we have used the trending and latest technology called "Internet Of Things (IOT)". Gartner Inc., predicts 6.4 billion devices to be connected to the internet in 2016 which will support the total services spending of 235 billion dollars. We are proud to contribute in the same.

Project Highlights : The project is one-of-its-kind. Many projects have been made using micro-controller or micro-processor but none with raspberry-pi and using IOT. We have completed the software implementation on MATLAB and are focusing on completing the hardware section which is going to be completed within a month. Our research paper titled " Simulation of Prepaid Energy Meter on MATLAB" got published in IJAEEE (International Journal of Advances in Electrical and Electronics Engineering). The project has got many appreciations from our honored faculties and has been selected under 'i-start', a platform for the start-ups to present the innovative ideas/projects hosted by IIC (Innovation and Incubation Center). Our project is currently under government scrutiny for the funds for start-up. The above reasons states that it is not just a project but even bigger than that and hence our project must deserve to win the contest.
