Intel's Atom Based Processor - An Attempt To Save NetBook's Sinking Boat

First things first, A very Happy New Year to you! Remember Netbooks? Yes, I am talking about those small devices whose market is ruined by tablets! And in order to rejuvenate it, Intel has launched third generation atom-based processor, previously codenamed “cedar trail”.

The new processor is a result of pairing of two dual-core mobile processors Intel Atom N2600 and Intel Atom N2800. Apart from these it also consists of Intel Atom D2500 and D2700 for entry-level desktop and intelligent system solutions. The platform has a dedicated media engine, so now user can play 1080p and Blue-Ray videos. Integrated Intel Media Graphic Accelerator 3600/3650 and Integrated Memory Controller promise better performance for videos and gaming.

Coming to the features, the platform has a lot of them. Two new features are Intel Wireless Display and Intel Wireless Music which enable user to stream the video from Netbook to his Tv set and stereo music using home speakers. Another new feature is Intel Smart Connect Technology which allows immediate connection to internet as soon as user opens the Netbook. This feature also updates Tweets, RSS feeds, Email inbox even if the Netbook is in sleep mode. It has 10 hours of battery life and weeks of standby. The overall system performance is increased by around 18 percent and it has 20 percent less power consumption than earlier models of this category.

Acer has already announced Acer Aspier One D270 with Cedar Trail, and Intel claims by the end of 2012 all the major Netbook provider will be using this processor. But, by looking at situation of Netbooks market now a days, it would be interesting to see what change Cedar Trail can bring.
