Ingenic Newton Chip To Power Android Wearables - Specs Revealed

The newly introduced Ingenic Newton chip is all set to power the Android wearables in the coming days. The chip is able to achieve really good power consumption figures at around - from 4mW in standby to 260mW at peak. It means that a Ingenic-powered device such as a smartwatch could last for more than 30 hours on a single charge. On the specifications list, you will find a 1 GHz MIPS based CPU, a 2D graphics engine, hardware video codecs, multi-standard VPU that offers 720p @ 30fps playback. On the connectivity front, there's Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, NFC and FM. Packed inside it is a 256KB L2 Cache RAM and up to 3 GB DDR3/DDR2/LPDDR RAM + eMMC.

The best feature of the Newton chip is its size. At 21.6mm x 38.4mm dimensions, the chip is the size of a quarter dollar coin and therefore great for small and portable wearable devices. Already shipped in many popular smartwatch models, the chip is based on the Android certified technology. Created from the ground up for a fully featured wearable experience, the Ingenic Newton chip has triple-axis Gyroscope/Accelerometer/Magnetometer, Pressure, Humidity and Temperature sensors and a LCD or EPD display with TP and backlight.

This product comes as great move as the focus these days is on the wearable segment, which by the way is expected to become a $30.2 billion industry by 2018 (according to BCC Research). In the near future, we expect to see a many more dedicated platforms and operating systems developed and designed specifically for the ultra-portable, low power wearable devices. Google is leading that game by introducing a #-Link-Snipped-#. The company has already created a workgroup of Android Wear promoters too.

Among the various applications of the Ingenic Newton chip, the primary ones include - home appliances, wearable devices, security & consumer electronics, industrial control and of course, healthcare.

It has to be noted here that the Newton chip isn't fully compatible with the Android Wear as of now. The company has shared that since they are the only CPU IP supplier on the list of Google ecosystem partners, the MIPS architecture is fully covered and we can expect the chip to power the next generation of android wearable devices pretty soon.
