Indian Government is funding a research project on the latest 5G technology

The Indian government has decided to implement an ambitious research project on the 5G technology in collaboration with the country's premier academic Institutes. The amount allocated for the project is Rs 36.51 Crore, as informed in the parliament by the department of Electronics and Information Technology.

The communication and IT minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad notified the parliament in writing that the project was approved in September 2015, with an outlay of 36.51 Crore over a period of 3 years and was to be jointly undertaken by IISc-Bangalore, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Hyderabad and IIT-Madras. He also explained that these institutes will dig deep into the technology and try to conduct breakthrough research which will help to introduce the 5G technology in the country. The research team will also jointly develop advanced simulators and prototypes to aid the research. The Intellectual Property Rights(IPR), developed in this project will be contributed for 5G standardization.

However, a large chunk of citizens have raised concerns about the poor quality bandwidth available for existing 3G and 4G networks. Replying to such concerns, the minister assured that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has already organized several meetings with senior officers of the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), which will effectively replace the current technology with a better one. The minister confirmed that to improve the 3G service, private TSPs added 14751 additional sites in the last six months and BSNL added 1886 additional sites across the country. He further added that the DoT has awarded broadband wireless access (BWA) or 4G spectrum and 3G spectrum in order to facilitate TSPs to launch such services. According to him, additional spectrum allotted in November 2012 and February 2014 through an open auction may also be utilized for the launch of 3G and 4G services in a new and upgraded manner.

The decision by the government to undertake advanced research on 5G technology is surely a step in the right direction. Once the project is implemented, it will improve connectivity across the nation and give a big boost to create a 'Digital India'.
