Govt. of India Setting Up New Center For Botnet Cleaning & Malware Analysis

Digital India program is getting stronger with every passing month. Government officials working on this project have taken an initiative for analysis of malware and cleaning of botnets so that device owners can remove malicious software for free and have a more secure experience while using various services. Botnet (a word short for robot and network) is a term used to denote the network of internet connected computers that start spam attack or DDoS (Denial of Service) attacks. The Government of India is setting up this centre within the next three months. Engineers from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (ICERT) will be working on this national cyber security project to ensure that there's a safe cyber environment for all citizens of India.

The team at ICERT will collaborate with various ISPs (Internet Service Providers) for executing the project. Whenever the Government's analysis center detects the presence of a malicious software on the end user's device, it will have the ISP send a message to the infected device about it. A simple solution to remove the malicious software will be made available on the CERT website. The user can use that to remove it and the entire process will not be a paid one.

Other than tackling of the malicious software, the Digital India program's cyber security unit will also focus on the email policy implementation. This policy suggests that government officials are not to use any online services from private companies such as Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail. To ensure the security of crucial official communications (to keep it safe from getting monitored from spies), having a strict email policy it of much importance.

To have a healthy and strong email infrastructure, the Govt. of India has approved Rs. 98.2 Crore, a part of which will be used to provide for ~ 50 Lakh email IDs to all government officials across various states in India. The Digital India is taking aggressive steps for filling most gaps in cyber security and has a lot of constructive plans in place for them.

We recently shared about the Government's Digital India initiative that brought Government's Digital India Initiative Brings High Speed Internet To 50,000 Villages. Among other projects, there are actions being taken to bring e-gov services across all jurisdictions, make online transactions cashless, use GIS for decision support systems as well as to build access for digital resources in all Indian languages via cloud.
