Google Wants To Inject Smart Lenses Into Your Eyes

Google has been on it when it comes to wearables but it has not been successful yet. Its ambitious Project Glass failed to take off and ever since then the Alphabet Inc owned company is trying to get back in business. Google has some weird ideas though and one of them was unearthed by Forbes recently. The patent application was made public by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on 28th April 2016. According to the patent application filed jointly by Google and inventor Andrew Jason Conrad talks about a method of correcting vision that involves injecting and moulding a smart lens directly into the eyeballs.

Google Smart Lenses

The patent application talks about a scary process where the natural lens of the eye would be removed surgically and the lens would be injected as a fluid which would later then solidify and turn into an artificial lens for the eye. The lens would be a smart one as it is expected to contain all the bits and bobs of Internet of Things. The lens would house components like storage, sensors, radio and a battery that would be recharged with the help of an energy harvesting antenna. The lens would probably be powered by Wi-Fi backscatter technology. The electronic lens will also interface with an external computer with the help of an interface device.

The main purpose of the lens would be to assist the process of focusing external light into the patient’s eye. The only problem here is that it is just a patent application for now and we do not know if it would actually be put into production or even a prototype would be made.
