Google Unveils Huawei Nexus 6P And LG Nexus 5X With Nexus Imprint Fingerprint Sensor

Google unveiled its flagship smartphones, the LG-built Nexus 5X and the Huawei-built Nexus 6P at the much awaited event in San Francisco that concluded a few moments ago. While LG Electronics had already worked with Google in the past for the Nexus 5, it was for the first time that Chinese networking and telecommunications equipment manufacturer, Huawei got the chance to deliver a flagship smartphone for Google who has always sought the help of hardware manufacturers to develop its devices. The prices of Nexus 6P start at $499 (32870 INR) and the Nexus 5X will set you back by $379 (24965 INR). Both the Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) smartphones will ship to select countries from late October. For buyers in the US, Google has announced an Apple Care-esqe, device protection program that will cost you $89 and $69 for the 6P and 5X respectively and provide two year coverage for both mechanical problems and accidental damage. Let’s discuss both the Nexus smartphones one by one starting with the bigger Nexus 6P.

Nexus 6P

The name Nexus 6P is actually a misnomer because the updated model features a 5.7 inch display which is 0.2 inches smaller than the Motorola-built #-Link-Snipped-# which was launched last year. The display however is an AMOLED one with WQHD (2560 x 1440) resolution protected by Gorilla Glass 3, which means you get 518 pixels per inch. The best addition to the Nexus 6P is the Nexus Imprint fingerprint sensor that is interestingly located on the back of the Nexus 6P. The Nexus Imprint lets you unlock your screen with a single touch, acts as an authenticator for various apps including Google’s mobile payment platform, Android Pay.

Nexus devices have always faced flak from fans about their underwhelming camera performance and when you read in the company announcement that it has a 12MP sensor you get a little angry. But Huawei has done some substantial work to make the average size sensor a good one by giving it 1.55μm-sized pixels which can capture as much light as possible in low-light conditions. It adds a broad-spectrum CRI-90 dual flash and IR laser-assisted autofocus just like you get on LG’s flagship G4. You can capture 4K videos at 30 fps and slow motion videos at 240fps. The selfie shooter has an 8 MP resolution and can capture HD resolution videos. Underneath the hood you find a new version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset that houses a 64-bit 2GHz octa-core processor, Adreno 430 GPU and 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The Nexus 6P will be sold in 32 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB memory variants with no option to expand that storage with help of microSD cards. The Nexus 6P is made out of anodized aluminium and equipped with a 3450mAh battery along with a USB Type C port. Suffice to say it has all the connectivity and sensors that you would expect from a flagship.

Nexus 5X

As you might have already figured out the LG Nexus 5 has less impressive specs than its sibling. You get a 5.2 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution display with 423 ppi and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Underneath you find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset with a 1.8 GHz 64-bit hexa-core CPU, Adreno 418 GPU and 2GB LPDDR3 RAM along with 16 or 32 GB of storage without a microSD card slot. The Nexus 5X features the same impressive camera as the 6P but downgrades the front sensor to a 5MP one. The Nexus 5X is made out of polycarbonate housing and is powered by a 2700 mAh battery and comes with the same USB Type C port. The Nexus 5X comes with Nexus Imprint fingerprint sensor.

If you are in the US and decide to pre-order any of the two Nexus devices you shall be receiving a $50 Google Play gift card and 90 days of free Google Play Music. Google has dropped it players in the smartphone market to battle it out with the Apple iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. Let’s see who emerges as the winner.
