Google Going Green; Will Use Thermal Energy At Taiwan Data Center

As they say, when you are big, so are your responsibilities. Google understands this and they have been coming up with creative energy saving solution like seawater cooling, water recycling etc. for a long time. This time they are planning to implement a new idea for their new data center in Taiwan, that is the use of thermal energy to keep the temperature low. The new system will store thermal energy to be used in the day time while air conditioners will work only in night when costs are low.

Daniel Alegre, president at Google Asia Pacific division said, “We've taken that into account, into our investment in this data center, which is actually one of the reasons why we are very committed to a green solution to minimize our energy consumption”. The new system will reduce the power use as the air conditioners will be working in the night time only. The system will store the water, cool it in the night and will store it in isolated tanks, keeping its temperature low. The whole system will work as a “Thermal Battery”. Now, in the daytime, when the environment heats up, this water will be used to cool down the facility. Chien Lee-feng, Google Taiwan managing director said that this revolutionary technique is the first to be used at a Google data center.

According to a report published in Error | Focus Taiwan - CNA English News there are chances that Taiwan government is going to increase electricity price in the country. In times like this Google has come up with an energy efficient which will use almost 50 percent less power than normal Data centers. According to Chien this is going to be one of the most efficient and environment friendly data centers in Asia.
