Google Drive For Android Gets An Update, Better UI & Optical Character Recognition

With the purpose of making the Drive smoother and more accessible, Google has announced several upcoming improvements packaged in a single update. The update brings a new User Interface, neater and simpler than the previous version. The card-style UI allows users to swipe between files to see larger previews. The file name is visible along with an icon that indicates the type of the document. Google hopes this will facilitate a quick review of the files stored on the drive. If the user wishes to keep few files for offline use on his/her phone, he/she can do so by clicking on "download a copy" from the actions menu inside settings.

The OCR feature for the Drive has also been updated for easier use. Receipts, letters, bills or other important documents can be saved to the Drive to keep a record by using the "Scan" button on the Add New menu. By taking a snapshot of the document using the phone camera and uploading it to the Drive, it's automatically converted and stored as a PDF. Moreover, Drive uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to recognize text from scanned documents, so a simple search later would render the scanned document. Come to think of it, that is indeed a neat feature.

More reasons of relief for the white-collar worker, Google Sheets has also seen some improvements. The app lets the user adjust font types and sizes for a spreadsheet and decide on the cell text colors and cell alignment. Of course, the Drive app comes with Cloud Print support and all you have to do is to give the command.
