Fujitsu Is Developing A Smart Ring That Lets You Enter Text With Your Fingertip

Fujitsu Laboratories has announced that it is developing a ring-type wearable device that will let users enter text by waving their fingertip in the air. Fujitsu says that the wearable is still being developed for real life applications but we can expect a public launch sometime later this year. Fujitsu started developing their iteration of the smart ring once they noticed that head-mounted devices and other wearables had become increasingly popular with building and factory maintenance workers who needed their hands to remain free at all times. Although wearables are excellent in dispensing information, users still had to take out their smartphones or tablets to interact with that information.

Fujitsu added motion sensors to the ring to help it track the movement of the wearer’s fingertip. It developed a new technology that would interpret these motions and identify the character input. Fujitsu proudly states that it managed to achieve 95 percent accuracy deducing numeric input without any training. One of the most interesting things about Fujitsu’s handwriting recognition technology is that it can recognise the unwanted connections between the strokes of the letterform that result from the longhand trace handwriting. In simpler terms this means that you do not have to lift off your finger after every letter.

Fujitsu’s ring weighs less than 10 grams. While this might be heavy as compared to other smart rings, you have to keep in mind that the company has managed to cram in NFC reader, Bluetooth, accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetic sensors. Unlike other wearables which feature rechargeable batteries, Fujitsu has settled for a button cell battery to power its ring. We advise you to not get excited about the product because this one is strictly meant for industrial use.
