Ferrari Unveils FXX K Plug-in Hybrid Supercar To Compete with McLaren P1 & Porsche 918

One of the biggest fears of a petrol head or a gear head is that when the world finally runs out of petrol, his or her favourite supercar will go out of production and he/she has to live in a world of slow hybrids like Toyota Prius and electric cars like the G Wiz. These fears were alleviated in the year 2013 when companies like McLaren and Porsche launched the P1 and 918 respectively. These were proper supercars with over 800 horsepower and they utilised electric engines along with petrol engines to give them an extra boost. This meant that they were quiet in the city and friendlier to the environment and you could unleash a V8 bellow on the track when whim arose. The two-way fight between the McLaren and Porsche has another competitor with Ferrari announcing the FXX K, a plug-in hybrid supercar based on the LaFerrari.

Before we jump into the technical specifications of the FXX K, let’s take some time to know the name of the car. The name FXX signifies the Italian company’s client development program that began over a decade ago with the Ferrari Enzo. The letter K stands for the KERS hybrid system found on the car. The electric motor in this car delivers 187 horsepower. By the virtue of its electric motor only it can surpass a sixth generation Golf GTI which has just 170 hp on the middle range variant. The company has fitted the same 6.3-liter V12 engine found on the LaFerrari but upped the power from 789 to 848 horsepower. Keen students of mathematics would have by now calculated that the FXX K has the 1,035 horses (pun intended) under its hood.

After giving the FXX K its mighty power, the Italians thought to cram in some new design features that would help the car achieve biblical speeds. On the front they put in a two-part splitter, on the side we find vertical fins and massive side skirts that extend between the wheels. On the back we get a dynamic rear wing, a vertical fin and a big diffuser. All this results in a downforce of 540 kg at 200 km/h. Downforce is extremely important for a powerful beast like the FXX K as it allows the car to travel faster through a corner by increasing the vertical force on the tires giving it more grip.

Other highlights of car are a four-mode setting that allows you to chose the amount of power you need at any moment, a electronic differential, traction control, ABS, and Racing Side Slip Angle Control, Pirelli slick tyres and sensors that monitor longitudinal, lateral and radial acceleration and of course temperature and pressure. It’s nearer to the end of the article and we have to deliver the bad news. Even if you have ludicrous amount of cash lying in your pockets you won’t be able to buy the FXX K because it is an experimental car and the company is allowing a highly select group of Client-Test-drivers to take the supercar on a ride next weekend during the Finali Mondiali at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.
