Facebook Brings Riff App On Android & iOS As A Creative Video Making Tool

When Facebook decides to fights its rivals it has many reasons and more importantly greater ideas for the feature. A few hours ago, Josh Miller, one of Facebook's Product Managers, posted on their Newsroom blog about the launch of a new app called Riff that has been made live for Android and iOS platforms. This time, it seems that Facebook wants to give a fierce competition to the likes of Vine app, Snapchat and event Google's YouTube, as the new Riff app allows users to make 20 second quick videos and share them. The idea for such an app struck them when last year’s ‘Ice Bucket’ Challenge went viral as thousands of people uploaded their short videos on Facebook. It was clear to the behind-the-scenes folks at Facebook that users were more interested in sharing and watching short videos instead of photos. Hence, Riff app came to life as few Facebook employees stayed up late at work to develop it as a side project.

Not only does the Riff app give apps like Vine a run for its money, but it takes video creating and sharing a step further. Similar to the stories feature in Snapchat app, Riff app users can embed their videos to any Riff video created by their friend and make it longer. This means that if one of your friends post a 20 second Riff video, you can create one of your own and append it at the end of his/her video. Not only does this make way for creating videos collaboratively from anywhere in the world, but it lets users be as creative as they want and make the whole video sharing process a lot more fun.

Here's how Facebook wants you to use the Riff app:

Anyone can start a topic such as 'Birthday Wish' and create a 20 second video. This user's friends can watch it and choose to add their own video clips on the same topic. This way the video can grow endlessly and the way Facebook puts it, it could become an inventive project. If you thought that this activity was limited to the Facebook platform, well here's some good news. The Facebook engineers are working on letting users embed Riff videos outside of Facebook on different platforms. Here is a sample video -
