Ericsson Reveals OpenStack Based Ericsson Cloud System

Ericsson is ready to try its hands on cloud computing market with its brand new Ericsson Cloud System. This new mobile oriented system, that is based on OpenStack and uses the concepts of Software Defined Networking (SDN), is supposed to be delivered by first quarter of 2014.
The Ericsson Cloud System is a comprehensive solution for the distribution and orchestration of cloud capabilities. The system aims to deliver the benefits of cloud across the network. The new system includes Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment that is an open, distributed platform based on OpenStack and Kernel-based Virtual Machines. It also comes with Ericsson Cloud Manager for end-to-end orchestration. In other services it includes the Ericsson Blade System and Ericsson Smart Service Router.

As the number of smartphone users is increasing, Ericsson wants mobile carriers to grasp market opportunities by enabling end-to-end elasticity using network assets. According to press release, cloud service need to be distributed and networks, including computing and storage capabilities, need to be elastic on an end-to-end basis and this combination can bring a new set of capabilities that doesn't exist today.
