EA Reacts to Activision's Trash-Talk Disapproval!

Electronic Arts listened to what Activision stated about 'mudslinging', and going by its official response, one can see that it doesn't share the similar opinion. Reacting to the war of words that's taken place between #-Link-Snipped-# and Call of Duty® | Best-Selling Video Game Franchise, Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg presented a speech at Gamescom where he demanded an end to the trash talking. According to him, competition is good, but "this type of rhetoric (referring to EA's John Riccitiello talking about his wish to see Call of Duty "rot from the core) is bad for our industry. It's one thing to want your game to be successful. It's another to actively want the games of others to fail."

#-Link-Snipped-#

EA's spokesperson Jeff Brown didn't react kindly to this accusation. In a statement given to #-Link-Snipped-#, he said, "Welcome to the big leagues, Eric. I know you're new in the job, but someone should have told you this is an competitive industry. You've got every reason to be nervous. Last year Activision had a 90 share in the shooter category. This year, Battlefield 3 is going to take you down to 60 or 70. At that rate, you'll be out of the category in 2-3 years. If you don't believe me, go to the store and try to buy a copy of Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk."

For those who don't know, Guitar Hero as well as Tony Hawk failed miserably in the market, with Tony Hawk Shred managing to attract just 3000 customers in the debut month. Call of Duty destined for a similar fate is highly unlikely. Sales may stop increasing at the same rate they are doing now, but to hint that Battlefield and Medal of Honor or other shooter game  will attract the same kind of market share that Call of Duty currently holds is an opinion passed out too soon without due caution.

The latest Call of Duty game, Black Ops, of late sold 25 million units , which is three million units more than the earlier Modern Warfare 2's 22 million. Its digital business has grown well accordingly, with Black Ops soon getting its fourth map pack and the Call of Duty Elite service en route soon enough for Modern Warfare 3's launch in November this year.
