ABSTRACT: This paper describes the construction of low cost, portable, real-time, miniaturised optical sensor and phase detection system for the lifetime measurement of fluorescence sensor in frequency domain. Here pH, dissolved oxygen and free chlorine measurement is done. Sensing membrane for all the three samples are prepared separately and used while measurement. The sensing membranes prepared have good photochemical stability. The concentration of samples correlate with the fluorescence phase shifts, which can be determined using: an integrated chip and multiplier based detection circuit. The advantages of the portable sensor include the non-consumption of fluorescence dye, no required reference substance, greater accuracy and fast response.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Phase detection system has greater stability and accuracy and is a new field to explore.
We have intrest in sensor design and analog circuit design so we chose this project.
spectrometers which were used for chemical analysis are very expensive and are not portable.
our project gives an alternative to the device. Thus it is an intresting field to work in.
The circuit design for signal conditioning circuit involves knowledge about the analog circuits and as we are intrested in it we were able to do calculations and circuit design was done quickly.
optical sensor design using the fluorescence effect is a study on various topics. All the topics are important and thus learning and knowledge gaining is done a lot.
We are doing measurement for more than one type of sample, thus the worthness of the project is very high.
This project can be used for various chemical analysis, as it is portable it can be used at any place and can be used for chlorine concentration measurement in water.
It has accurate results and fast response.
