Design, Analysis & Fabrication of Four Wheel Steering & Zero Steer Mode

Project Abstract / Summary : As the conventional steering system i.e. two wheel steering system fails to meet the challenge of improving steering response and vehicle stability at certain speed. The aim of this project is to design & analyze an improved driving assistance system which provides four wheel steering mechanism as well as Zero steer mode.
The designed mechanism replaces complex four wheel steering system and provides steerability to wheels on rear axle as well as to the front wheels in respective directions namely In-Phase and Counter-Phase modes, while Zero Steer mode enables a vehicle to rotate about its own center axis.
The mechanism has been designed in Creo Parametric 2.0 with the dimensions of a benchmark vehicle, simulation and the study was carried out upon the mechanism which shows a decrease of 32.8% in turning radius when compared to conventional two wheel steering system, Four wheel steering helps in achieving comparatively smaller turning radius, coping with understeer /oversteer. The above mechanism is much simpler, robust as well as economical compared to their conventional counterparts and has a tremendous potential to be utilized in automotive industry in order to assist the driver by providing higher steering response while zero steer assists a driver in taking U-turn at the same position hence reducing steering effort.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : 4-Wheel Steering System has not gained much popularity over two wheel steering system, even though experiments have proved that it provides excellent maneuverability, high stability and a solution to overcome oversteer/understeer.
Although many designs have been brought forward so far, while most of them doesn’t provide a perfect blend of simple design, economics and robustness but our designed four wheel steering mechanism which is easy to fabricate without making any significant changes in conventional two wheel steering mechanism and is more cost effective as compared to other 4WS mechanism.
Our mechanism is much simpler, robust as well as economical compared to their conventional counterparts and has a tremendous potential to be utilized in automotive industry in order to assist the driver by providing higher steering response while zero steer assists a driver in taking U-turn at the same position hence reducing steering effort.
